Remarkable $200,000 Grant Helps Remove Barriers for CEL Members with Developmental Disabilities

CEL (Center for Enriched Living) is thrilled to share the incredible news that we’ve been awarded a generous $200,000 grant from The Smith Tieken Foundation. This support comes at a crucial time and will significantly enhance our ability to continue empowering our members with developmental disabilities by improving two key areas: transportation and assistive technology.

“Transportation and technology can mean the difference between isolation and independence,” said Herb Washington, CEO of CEL. “This grant from The Smith Tieken Foundation is more than an investment in equipment. It’s an investment in dignity, access, and the belief that everyone deserves the chance to experience all of life’s possibilities.”

For many of our members, safe and reliable transportation is their link to the community, to friendships, and to meaningful experiences. With this grant, CEL will replace two aging vehicles with new 15-passenger vans, allowing members to enjoy hundreds of opportunities to access community events, overnight adventures, and weekly social programs!

In addition to the new vehicles, Smith Tieken is upgrading technology infrastructure with Smart Boards and iPads across our REACH, Catalyst, and Social & Recreational programs. These tools will empower our members to communicate more easily, engage in hands-on learning, and receive the personalized support they need to thrive.

CEL Program Manager Veronica Luna said, “The upgrades funded by Smith Tieken play a key role in helping members communicate more effectively, advocate for themselves, stay engaged in our activities and programming, explore new places in the community, and discover new learning opportunities. Thank you!”

Individuals with developmental disabilities are far more likely to experience social isolation, limited access to resources and employment, and barriers to basic services like transportation. The Smith Tieken Foundation seeks to “ease human suffering” and CEL’s programs work to create a place where people are seen and appreciated for who they are, supported in their goals, encouraged to grow, and connected to many opportunities.

CEL serves over 400 individuals each year, and every program is designed with intention to help people with developmental disabilities not only achieve their goals, but also enjoy the journey along the way.

And behind every way that CEL empowers our members is a network of partners like The Smith Tieken Foundation who make it all possible. Thank you for empowering people with developmental disabilities in your community. You are making a world of difference!
