Highland Park City Council Recognizes CEL and NDEAM
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM, a time to recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities and promote inclusive employment practices. This year marks the 80th anniversary of NDEAM, and the City of Highland Park celebrated by issuing an official Mayoral Proclamation, and presented it to CEL at the October 20 City Council meeting.
At the City Council meeting, the Council recognized CEL’s efforts to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to pursue meaningful employment and full participation in their communities. Councilmember Yumi Ross commented, “It’s so important what you’re doing. I think it’s amazing. Thank you.”
CEL Employment Specialist Don Miner accepted the proclamation and shared remarks on behalf of the organization, saying, “For fifty-seven years, CEL has empowered teens, adults, and seniors with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live, work, and belong. Our members have a tremendous amount to contribute to the workplace, and our goal is to help actualize this and land their dream job.”
The City of Highland Park pledges to continue to take steps throughout the year to recruit, hire, retain, and advance individuals with disabilities and work to pursue the goals of opportunity, full participation, economic self-sufficiency, and independent living for people with disabilities.
The proclamation reflects Highland Park’s leadership in promoting inclusive opportunities for all. Together with community partners and employers, CEL continues to advance its mission of ensuring that people with the disabilities have opportunities to experience paid employment, build friendships, realize personal goals, and be included in the community.
This October and beyond, CEL invites local businesses, schools, and community organizations to explore how inclusive employment practices benefit everyone. To learn more or collaborate, please visit our Employment Opportunities Program.
