From Staff to Volunteer, Four Decades Later

CEL looked a little different in 1988. We didn’t have our own beautiful building with Universal Design, and social/recreational programs were all that we offered. But even back then, our members were supported by excellent, dedicated staff who cared about them.
That’s the year Marilyn, a young professional eager to make a difference, first walked through CEL’s doors as a staff member. For two years she worked to build relationships and create joyful experiences alongside our members. Even after moving further south and beginning a long career in recreational therapy, CEL stayed close to her heart.

“It was one of my first jobs. It started me off professionally, and I’ve always had such good memories of it,” she said.
Now, more than 35 years later, Marilyn is back at CEL – this time as a volunteer. The building is new, the faces have changed, and the program offerings have expanded, but that familiar CEL feeling remains.
“The culture and atmosphere still feel the same, in a very good way. It’s been enhanced,” she said.
Marilyn brings her energy and kindness to a variety of weekend programs, sharing moments of connection and fun with members. Whether they’re soaking in the fresh air or enjoying music on a bus ride, she’s right there with them.
“For me, I love the outdoors and experiencing nature. The bus rides are also great. Everyone is together, the music is going, and everyone is happy,” she said.

When asked what she’d tell someone thinking about volunteering, Marilyn’s message is clear: “Go ahead and do it. It’s such a welcoming place for members and for volunteers. You’ll feel comfortable right away. CEL has so many different programs there is something for every interest.”
Marilyn’s story is a reminder that CEL is more than a program or a place. It’s a community that stays with you. Her journey from staff member to volunteer shows the power of connection, belonging, and coming home to a space that truly welcomes you.
